Choosing a USB-C hub for a 4K 60 Hz monitor

Work through the laptop, hub, cable, and monitor as one display path—and decide when a direct connection is the simpler purchase.

Anker 555 USB-C Hub (A8383)

Shortlist 555 when 4K at 60 Hz is required

Anker lists that HDMI mode for A8383. It is the relevant one of these two hubs for that stated requirement, subject to the host, cable and display requirements.

Skip it if: Your exact laptop port does not support the required display path, or you need a configuration not documented for this hub.

Anker 332 USB-C Hub (A8355)

Consider 332 only if 4K at 30 Hz is acceptable

Its A8355 page lists a lower HDMI maximum. It can remain an option when that complete mode meets the actual requirement.

Skip it if: You are buying specifically to obtain 4K at 60 Hz.

The purchase decision

If your requirement is 3840 × 2160 at 60 Hz through HDMI, eliminate a hub whose documented maximum is 4K at 30 Hz before comparing its extra ports. Between the two named models here, Anker 555 belongs on that shortlist and Anker 332 does not meet that requirement. This does not establish that every USB-C laptop can deliver the higher mode.

First check whether the laptop already has an appropriate display output. If one suitable cable provides the needed connection, a multiport accessory adds little unless you also need its other ports.

Build a four-part display record

Copy these details from the documentation for the exact equipment, not from a family name or a photograph of the connector.

LaptopExact model and physical portDoes this port support the display function and required mode?
HubExact model identifierIs 4K at 60 Hz documented for this host arrangement?
CableConnector type and supported modeDoes it support the complete resolution/refresh requirement?
MonitorExact model and selected inputDoes this input support that mode, and what setting selects it?

Why the refresh number belongs beside the resolution

A resolution label describes the image grid; refresh rate describes how often the display can update it. Keep both in your purchase note. As a simple timing calculation, 30 updates per second gives about 33.3 milliseconds per update, while 60 gives about 16.7 milliseconds. This arithmetic is not a measurement of input lag, gaming performance, or how smooth a particular screen will look.

The practical reason for recording the complete mode is to avoid replacing a working hub with another accessory that reproduces the same limitation. A product title containing 4K is not enough evidence for the 60 Hz requirement.

Use the standards information for the right question

VESA explains that DisplayPort can travel through USB-C using Alt Mode and can connect to other display interfaces through suitable adapters. That establishes why the host port’s supported functions matter. It does not certify your particular laptop, hub, cable and monitor together.

Check the hub manufacturer’s host requirements and the laptop manufacturer’s documentation. Where those disagree or omit a necessary detail, resolve it with the relevant manufacturer before ordering. The shape of the socket does not settle the purchase.

Two useful shopping examples

A laptop with a supported direct output and a single monitor: compare a suitable direct cable first. Add the hub only if charging or other peripherals make it a useful part of the daily arrangement.

A laptop needing several ports plus a 4K 60 Hz HDMI connection: evaluate A8383 against the complete worksheet. If the host documentation does not support the required path, buying the higher-numbered hub does not fix that omission.

Confirm the mode after connecting

Use the operating system’s display settings and the monitor’s information display to check the selected resolution and refresh rate. A working picture alone does not tell you which mode is active. Check the exact setup instructions before changing the connection path.

If the intended mode is unavailable, follow the manufacturers’ troubleshooting sequence. Avoid buying a chain of speculative adapters: identify the unsupported or unverified part first. Current price, included accessories, seller and return terms belong in the final purchase check.
