Its one-piece design removes height and folding choices from the daily routine. Consider it when the fixed arrangement puts your own laptop where you want it.
Skip it if: You need an adjustable height or a stand that folds for storage and travel.
A fixed stand is a sensible shortlist when your laptop has a permanent place, the chosen height works for you, and you do not want to adjust joints between sessions. A folding stand is worth investigating when the same surface returns to dining, study or another person’s work at the end of the day. Those are different purchase requirements; neither format wins every setup.
Rain Design mStand and Twelve South Curve Flex give that distinction real product names. We compare the documented designs and dimensions below. We have not measured wobble, hinge wear or laptop cooling, so those are not reasons to pay more based on this guide.

Use the metric measurements as published rather than treating rounded inch values as an exact conversion. Stand height describes the stand; the top of the open laptop screen depends on the laptop, lid angle and selected adjustment.

A smaller stand rectangle does not guarantee more working room
Multiplying the listed width and depth gives a simple bounding rectangle: 480.7 cm² for mStand and 591.36 cm² for Curve Flex. The difference is about 111 cm². These are our calculations from published dimensions, not contact-area measurements or a claim about usable storage beneath either stand.
The laptop can overhang that rectangle. You also need room for hands, cables and whatever input devices you use. On a shallow desk, put a paper outline of the laptop in its intended position before buying. A smaller support under a wide laptop will not make the laptop disappear from the surface plan.
Plan the input devices before raising the laptop
Describe the normal working position, not only the tidy parked position. If an external keyboard and mouse are part of the setup, include their full working area. If you plan to type on the laptop itself, review the stand’s instructions and confirm that the proposed position suits the task. We are not making a health or posture prescription.
A stand also changes where attached cables leave the computer. Leave a route that does not pull connectors when the laptop is removed. Check that vents, feet and the laptop’s own support requirements are respected; a cooling improvement cannot be inferred from aluminum construction alone.
Treat foldability as a storage requirement
Measure the compartment where the stand will actually go. Curve Flex’s 30 mm folded height is useful information, but it is only one dimension of the packed item; width and depth still matter. Include the sleeve and other things competing for the same bag space.
At a permanent desk, the same folding mechanism may solve a problem you do not have. Put the fixed support at the proposed location using an appropriately supported mock-up for planning only, and check the screen position. Do not balance a working laptop on an improvised stack to simulate a purchased stand.
Before ordering
Record the exact laptop width and weight, proposed stand position, input-device space and storage destination. Confirm the model name: the mStand family contains different products, and a rotating or mobile model should not be assumed to have the specifications above.
Choose mStand if its fixed layout satisfies those checks. Choose Curve Flex if its adjustment and packing job justify the additional mechanism. Keep using the current arrangement if neither solves a specific problem. The shopping links are model searches; check the exact variant and current offer before purchase.
Evidence and limits
This is a specification-based buying guide. Product descriptions come from the sources below; the fit examples and decision rules are our editorial analysis. We have not measured durability, performance, or comfort in a product test.
Rain Design mStand specifications ↗One-piece construction and published 253 × 190 mm width/depth and 150 mm height. No hands-on stability or temperature testing is claimed.
Twelve South Curve Flex specifications ↗Published dimensions, folded and maximum stand heights, laptop width/load limits and included sleeve. Our space calculations use those published numbers.
